Next time that bad font width happens, respond P to the
error and you will be conversing with PUB. Type BURP INPUT
and see what is going on -- If there is something of the form
LABEL:COUNTERNAME then this is a bug I know about that has not been
fixed at SU yet. But I don't think that is it. Next type
THISFONT and see that you have the font number you wanted. Also
check THISLINE to see where PUB is up to in the line, and LMARG,
RMARG, INDENT1, INDENT2, and INDENT3. If you can't figure out
the problem still, thhen jot down the relevent data and send me another
nmessage. If it is a bug of yours, then it involves being in a
different font than the one you thought you were in, and that
font does not have the desired character. If it is a bug of
mine, then I don't have any idea what yet, but I am willing to look
during the next couple of weeks (but not after that).
Along with RMARG, etc., do check CHAR, CHARS, LINE and LINES, and
CHARW. In other words, find out all you can about PUB's state.

I sent my previous note to everyone who gets this one. The distribution
list is SOFT.DIS and I will collect replies into SOFT.ANS. Let me know
if you think someone should be added to the distribution list.

The file SOFT[FOO,DBA] is a memo of a few pages entitled "Software
goals at/for Stanford AI Lab". In it I put forward the opinion that
(to quote)
"... the quality of software ... and of the art of
programming, are in a poor state at the project."
It is intended to be relevant to current plans to expend a good deal
of resources on writing a new monitor. I would be very glad of your
reactions/comments/opinions to/on/of it. Scribble on a copy (you may
find a copy in your mailbox), or edit the file with E and put
(signed!) comments between <crlf>// and <crlf>.

Subject: PREVIOUS VERSION OF PUB
To: JRA at SU-AI
cc: BH at SU-AI
If there is something wrong with the new version after all this time it
ought to be fixed, so I deleted the old version from PUB,TES to save
space. I recommend tht you tell BH and me what the problem is,
but if you also must use the old version, you should:
AL PUB,TES
COPY PUB2.OLD[1,3]
COPY PUBSTD.DFS[1,3]
WHOOPPS --MAKE THAT LAST ONE BE:
COPY PUBSTD.OLD[1,3]
R PUB.OLD
You have to be ALIAS PUB,TES for this to work.
